California Pizza Kitchen
The 1980s were the golden age of pizza for California chefs and restaurateurs as they weighed in right and left with their interpretations of the versatile dish. One of the pioneers of what has come to be called California-style pizza was California Pizza Kitchen. Founded in 1985 by attorneys Larry Flax and Rick Rosenfield in Beverly Hills, Calif., CPK quickly established a reputation for highly innovative pies, such as the Original BBQ Chicken Pizza, BLT, Thai Chicken and Tandoori. Deciding to not restrict the menu to only pizza, the founders added pasta, salads, soups, tacos, sandwiches and desserts to diversify the menu. Shown here is a CPK menu, featuring such items as Spicy Chicken Tinga Quesadilla, Tuscan Panzanella Salad and Korean BBQ Steak Tacos for the non-pizza eater. The casual dining chain has more than 200 locations today.
